This place covers the three states of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. Chicago was described as the third largest city in the US metropolitan area. This survey was conducted in 2000. Thus it would be fair enough to say that Chicago is undoubtedly one of the most populous and largest cities in North America. On the basis of population it was found that Chicago had the 25th largest urban area in the world. The World Cities Study Group at the Loughborough University rated Chicago as an alpha world city. The Mississippi River watershed and the Great Lakes had a portage between them. Chicago was found near that portage in 1833. But it was turned into a city only in 1837.
