This fire destroyed the complete central business district of the city. It was a huge blow to the financial and economic sector of the city. But Chicago showed enormous spirit possibly showing the strength of human endeavor. After this fire, the city experienced rapid growth and rebuilding.

When the city was rebuilt, it came to be known as the Second City. The city that was destroyed in the fire came to be called the First City. Thus we see, from the very history of Chicago, that it has always been a city of human spirit and endeavor. This has helped the city to become one of the foremost business centers of the country.
